THE LIFE OF AN ACCUSED TERRORIST
Peninsula Contractor faces the greatest challenge of his life, by Randy Hagihara, times Tribune staff
HILLSBOR0URGH – For most of his adult life, accused Croatian terrorist Mile Boban has wandered the roads of a man without country. He fled his small aillage in Yugoslavia some 24 years ago as a penniless 17-year-old with “thirst for the truth”.
Hi settled in France, were he married and began raising a family – all the while dreaming about home-land he left behind. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States, quickly climbed the economic ladder as a builder contractor, and became a leader of Croatian nationalists in this country.
Now he faces the greatest challenge of his life: Next week – seven days before his 42nd birthday – Mile Boban must appear in a New York federal court, where he has been indicted for murder, extortion, conspiracy and arson. The government alleges that Boban and eight other members of the separatist organization Croatian National Resistance (OTPOR), were involved “in a pattern of activities … that include at least two murders, three arsons, in excess of 50 acts of extortion, four conspiracies to commit murder, and four acts of interstate transportation of explosives.”
The indictments, according the U.S Justice department, were results of a “six year international investigation” of Croatia separatist activity. Boban and the others were arrested last month by federal agents during simultaneous raids around the country. Boban was held in jail for five days before his release on $250.000 bond.
“My sister called me (from Yugoslavia) to tell me she read the newspaper stories about me,” Boban said. “She was crying. She said, “I never knew you were such bad man” I said, “Listen, my dear sister, I would be ashamed and would have to kill myself if they (Yugoslav government) talked good about me.”
Like other Croatian nationalists, Boban fiercely despises the Yugoslav government, (đavolski, sotonski prezire jugoslavensku vladu, mo. 13 listopada 2018. Mile Boban.) which was formed out of the ruins of World War ll under the dictatorship of the late Josip Broz Tito. Durin the War, Croatia had proclaimed its Independence and had allied itself to the Axes Powers.
But its government was quickly dismantled by Tito after the war, and Croatia was forced into the federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. Since then Croatians nationalists have been struggling for independence.
Boban and others claim that the Yugoslav government is responsible for the so-called “Balkan intrigue” that has “tyrannized” the Croatian emigre community for years.
In 1977. Croatians here and abroad receiving letters demanding that large sums of money be send to an organization called the Croatian Liberation Army in Paraguay.
Two recipients of the letters – one in New York (Ante Cikoja, mo. Mile Boban.)and one in Southern California – (Los Angeles, Križan Brkić, mo. Mile Boban.) were murdered on their doorsteps within a month of each other shortly after receiving yhe letters in 1978. and refusing to accede to the demands.
Bombing i Los Angeles, Chicago, new York, and Cleveland – cities that have the largest Croatian population – added to the intimidation , as well as violence against Croatians in West Germany, France and Sweden.
Boban and other nationalists claim the crimes were “orchestrated” by UDBA, the Yugoslav secret police, which they say has dispatched agents to the U.S and Western Europe to diffuse the Croatian separatist movement and divide the emigre community. “The United States are an easy field for them to work in,” Boban said during an interview at his spacious Hillsborough home. “They (Udba agents) can kill whomever they want – they can do anything they want with immunity. If they get caught, the only thing that will happen to them is they will get kicked out of the country.” Boban declined to talk about the charges he faces, expect to proclaim his innocence. Nor would he talk about his codefendants. He did however, discuss at length his background and political beliefs, Cheerful noises made by his six children punctuated the conversation.
A stocky man with a wide, open smile and a handshake like an earthquake, Boban is a man of bed-rock beliefs. “If there is a country in the world that has so no right to exist,” he said through his thick Serbo-Croatian accent, “it is Yugoslavia.”
“I am not saying I am fighting to destroy Yugoslavia,” he said. “I am fighting to establish Croatia as an free and democratic state. “That is my standing and that is what will be written on my grave.”
For the past four years, Boban has been North American president of the Croatian National Resistance, a world-vide organization known among Croatian emigres as OTPOR. Federal agents estimated that ther are about 300 OTPOR members in the U.S.
“Our goal is to educate the Croatian people,” said Boban of his organization. “If we want a Croatian State – freedom for Croatia – we have to teach the Croatian people that they are Croatians, not Yugoslavs.”
Boban – who become naturalized U.S. citizen in 1978. and voluntarily registered for the draft last year at the age 41 to prove his “loyality to the United states” – noted that “it is forbidden to talk about Croatia” in Yugoslavia. Consequently, Croatians are ignorant of their history. They are also victims of massive propaganda war being waged by the Yugoslav government. Boban said.
