No, ratna zbivanja glavna su tema njegovih priča.

Mijat’s 104 years: I drink a glass of brandy, I rarely get angry, I don’t eat sweets

September 15, 2021Half a decade has passed since Mijo entered the second century of his life. Although traces of a hard life can be seen on his face and body, his clear mind and zeal for life, especially for the story, make him a middle-aged old man, writes Večernji list BiH.

Today everyone is closed – I wake up at night and see all the horrors I suffered during all the past wars. The most difficult part of my life is the one I went through on the Way of the Cross. It wasn’t easy stepping on dead bodies and blood. Tito handed us over to the partisans, and many young people didn’t make it home on the way – Mijo recalls those days, which today do not allow him to sleep peacefully.

Namely, in the village of Mamići in Širokobrije, not far from Kočerin, Mijo Martinović Rasić, surrounded by part of his family and friends (friends and acquaintances call him Mijat), celebrated his 105th year of life.

– These 104 years will fly by in an instant. The most difficult thing for me is that there are no more those old times when people socialized and communicated with each other. Today everyone shut himself up in his house. I don’t know what to tell you, what I can thank for living to such a deep old age. First of all, I lived in moderation without any exaggeration. Even today, I regularly drink a glass of brandy, a glass of wine or beer, I rarely get angry, I don’t eat much, and I don’t consume sweets at all. I go to bed around 10 p.m. at the latest, but I’m already on my feet at five – claims the celebrant.

Mijat has been living alone for many years, his wife died a long time ago. The children, eight of them, mostly do not live in Mamići. They finished high school and today they live in Split, Rijeka, Poreč, Belgium and elsewhere. You can talk to Mijat for hours and listen to interesting stories. However, war events are the main theme of his stories.

– I was a good soldier in the 13th regiment – Mijat often began his story by recalling those details, supported by names and places of events, as if they happened yesterday. When he talks about those times, it is difficult to stop him, but also to deviate from the topic, he pretends to be hard of hearing and uses the opportunity to present his views and opinions. His stories are more like the lectures of a chronicler than an old man who can only read and write.

With lit candles, cake, champagne, a short speech and everything else that is required for a worthy birthday celebration, Mijat celebrated his 104th birthday. He regrets that a year ago his acquaintance and fellow resident Jela, who was two years older than him, left this world, and he thinks that he is currently the oldest resident of this area.

He doesn’t want to leave his home

As daughter Anđa claims, Mijat cannot be persuaded to move in with any child. He wants to stay in his Mamići for the rest of his life, which, judging by his behavior, will not arrive so soon.

– He is the happiest here and any change would be difficult for him. She would kill him. It’s not easy for him, but he manages – says Mija’s daughter Anđa, and Anđa’s husband agrees, who took care of the specialty under the baking.

– I suggest that we celebrate my next birthday at Tosić’s, that’s the name of the nearby inn. I don’t want my children and friends to put in the effort in preparing meals. I want them to enjoy it too – says the celebrant who also drank two glasses of champagne for this special occasion. He liked that licorice wine. Mijo is not afraid of corona or other diseases. It bothers him that his hearing is poor, and his vision is slowly failing him.

– When I go outside, it’s hard for me not to trip over something and fall. I’m not used to hospitals, and I wouldn’t want to be a burden to anyone – says Mijat.

This probably the oldest inhabitant of his region also uses a mobile phone, listens to the radio and watches television, so that he is up to date with all the happenings in the world. It is heated with wood, but there is also air conditioning, just in case.
