Dimanche 9 Août 1981
Nous sommes partis à 10h à la messe. De 12h à 1h30 Milan a parlé avec Velimir Sulić à propos de ce comité pour la collection volontaire de l’argent pour la défense de Croates . Sommes revenus à la maison a 2h15 après s’être arrêté au magasin. Milan s’est décidé à faire le dîner qui était d’ailleurs très bon. Il a utilisé les légumes que nous avons cueillis la veille. L’après- midi s’est passé calmement et le soir il est allé chez sa sœur Kata car elle avait quelqu’un chez elle. Dennis a téléphoné sans me dire pourquoi et lorsque Milan est arrivé et que je lui ai dit qui avait téléphoné, il s’est dit tout de suite que c’était pour l’argent. Ou on va le trouver?J’étais trop fatiguée pour penser à ce problème et me suis dit que je penserais le lendemain.Lundi 10 Août 1981
Ai pensé jusqu’à maintenant 3h de l’après midi et il n’ y a vraiment qu’un moyen: Vendre tout ce que l’on a. J’ai envoyé Catherine dans la matinée chez Kata car nous avons mis une annonce pour vendre la maison dans le journal du samedi tout en mettant le numéro de téléphone de Kata. Aussi, au cas ou quelqu’un téléphone, Catherine ou dans l’après midi Sophie, lui donnera le numéro de téléphone de notre maison et de la nous leur donneront les renseignements. Mais toute la journée, personne n’a téléphone. Milan est allé jusqu’à Redwood City chercher le journal ou nous devions avoir l’interviewe. Mais il n’y avait rien.
Mardi 11 Août 1981
Milan a travaillé à San Bruno l’après midi, je vais avec les enfants acheter des vêtements pour l’école. Nous partons vers 12h30 et revenons à 14h30. Presque tout a été acheté. En rentrant, je trouve deux exemplaires de “Peninsula Tribune” à la porte et l’article est sensationnel. Milan amène aussi 2 exemplaires et il a aussi trouvé l’article très bon. Milan va le soir chez Kata et rien de particulier ne se passe ici. Je téléphone a Ivica Miličević pour qu’elle achète 2 exemplaires du journal.
Milan a travaillé à San Bruno. Dans l’après-midi, Danny Schliffer de chaîne 7News appelle et veut parler à Milan. Pourquoi? Il veut avoir une interview avec Milan à propos de son histoire, du procès etc…Tout de suite je me suis dis: “Encore! Que veulent-ils maintenant? Encore de l’histoire sur la Croatie pour laquelle mon mari lutte”. Lorsque Milan revient du travail, je lui ai dit ça. Il téléphone à ce Danny qui lui dit vouloir le voir avant son départ à New York pour la première audience avec le prosecutor, qui aura lieu Vendredi le 14 Août. Il n’y a que le lendemain matin, juste avant le départ de l’avion que Milan pourrait leur parler. Danny dit O.K., mais il veut voir toute la famille. L’avion partait à 10h15, ils seront à l’aéroport à 9h. Nous devons donc partir de la maison à 8h15 et rencontrer Dennis a 8h30.
Jeudi 13 Août 1981
Départ à 8h. Tout le matin, je suis excitée. Tu te rends compte? On va nous voir à la télé! Qu’est-ce que vont penser nos amis? Pourquoi nous veulent-ils? Ne pourraient-ils parler qu’à Papa seulement? On va à San Bruno car Milan doit voir quelque chose. Ensuite allons à Qantas avion chercher les journaux Hrvatski Tjednik qui doivent être arrivés d’Australie.
Quand John a assez de films sur les garçons qui ne bougent toujours pas, il tourne la caméra vers nous. Les autres passagers se retournent sur nous en se demandant ce qui se passe. John se tourne vers Milan, Dennis et Joyce et la caméra roule pendant un bout de temps. Joyce veut ensuite un bout de film sur lounge avec les autres passagers, une vue d’ensemble. Quand John passe devant les garçons, il voit que ceux-ci ont commencé à s’amuser avec leur “Star Wars figures”. Il en profite pour les prendre, spécialement Stjepan car Raphaël et Mile junior se sont sauvés. Les trois parlent toujours derrière. Quand nous nous levons pour partir à 9h30 car Sophie a un rendez-vous a Marine World pour un travail, Joyce me dit qu’elle sera chez nous pour prendre la maison en photo vers 11h. Nous sommes partis le matin à 8h et aucun lit n’était fait. Je dis: Dépêchons nous!…Arrivés à Marine World à 10h, nous laissons Sophie et à 10h25. Nous arrivons à la maison vers 10h40 et en 20 mn nous mettons la maison en ordre, lits, vaisselles etc…Je repars tout en demandant à Catherine de ramasser les jouets et de passer l’aspirateur dans la family room.
Je suis aller chercher Sophie et je reviens à la maison vers 11h15 et Joyce et John ne sont toujours pas là. Les enfants ont faim, je leur fais des sandwichs et à peine fini, voilà Joyce et John qui arrivent. Ils me disent s’être arrêtés à South San Francisco 415 Grand Avenu a Croatian Hall et que Debby leur a dit qu’aucune reservation n’a été annulée bien que Milan, le père a Debby leur ait affirmé qu’il y avait eu des cancellations. Il me demande s’il leur serait possible de prendre des films de ces cartes de Croatie qui sonnent dans la family room. Tout en regardant autour de la pièce. Joyce voit sur le bar une photo de Milan avec une cornemuse et un bonnet ecossais…..et le journal Peninsula News et la photo de Milan quand il ete arrete.
…..et elle me demande si c’est le costume national croate de Milan. Je lui ai dis non, mais quelque part dans le placard, je dois avoir une photo de Milan en costume Croate qui semble comme cela. “Oh! Please! Find it for me!”, elle me dit et me demande aussi de lui trouver une photo sur laquelle Milan se trouve auprès d’une brouette en bois, simplement pour montrer combien les outils sont “arrière”? (Aujourd’hui mardi 18 octobre 2022 j’ajoute l’histoire de cette photo. Au mois de Juillet 1969., à l’époque le gouverneur de Californie Ronald Reagan avait une parade officielle à San Francisco, pas loin du Golden Gate Bridge. Jerko Boban, Kukić et moi Mile Boban nous somme allés voir cette parade. La musique écossaise était là. Je me suis précipité vers un musicien ecossais et lui ai demandé de me donner ce costume national pour prendre une photo pour le souvenir. Ma note, Mile Boban.)
Quelques minutes après je trouve ou plutôt sa photo en costume croate et Joyce me dit “Merveilleux”! Elle explique à John ce qu’elle veut c’est cette photo en costume avec la brouette et une photo des tasses à café qui ont l’emblème croate. Je lui montre alors le “coat of arms” croate que l’on a et tout de suite elle dit à John. “Je réserve cela pour la fin. On prendra une photo de devant la maison ainsi que de la place ou ce “coat of arm” doit se trouver au-dessus de la porte. Quelques minutes se passent pendant lesquelles la caméra tourne et Joyce demande ensuite de prendre un bout de film sur l’ensemble du salon, la salle à manger et la cuisine. En tout, la session a duré environ 1h30. Après le film sur l’interview, John va dehors et prend une photo de la maison extérieurement. Joyce et Milan se parlent et elle lui dit qu’elle aimerait bien avoir quelques unes de ces photos en costum pour se souvenir. Milan lui a dit qu’il ne lui donne pas ces photos à son nom mais au nom de la Croatie pour laquelle il est né, pour laquelle il vit et pour laquelle il donne sa vie. Milan en costume croate et Joyce dit: “This man 20 years out of his country , still like to were his national garb” et ensuite une photo de la carte de Croatie “that belongs now to Yugoslavia”. Elle me dit que cette histoire sortira ce soir entre 6h et 7h sur la chaîne 7. Je téléphone de suite a Velimir Sulić pour qu’il annonce la nouvelle autour de San Jose. Je téléphone à Kata pour qu’elle fasse la même chose autour de San Mateo. J’ai téléphoné tout autour de Bay Area et autour pour leur faire savoir de regarder la T.V. ce soir
L’après midi je fais les courses et choix et l’autre jusqu’à 6h arrivés. Nous nous mettons devant la TV et attendons. A 6h10 Van Amburg annonce: “Next is the story of a Croatian Terrorist who fight in foreign soil for Croatia, but he call himself by another name: “Croatian Fighter”. Après ces quelques mots, publicité, ce qui permet à Nedjeljko Miličević que j’ai reussi a avoir préparé son magnétophone. Après la publicité, voilà le film de Stjepan en train de jouer avec ses Star Wars people et ensuite la photo de Milan disant: “I want my children to know from where their father come from. I do not want them if and when somebody ask them from where I come from that they do not know what to say”. Ensuite, une photo sur Milan en train d’embrasser les enfants et nous en train de partir sur l’escalier roulant. Ensuite, le film de la cuisine et family room en perspective et Joyce continue. “Not bad for a man who come to America whit $170 in his packet 12 years ago. His house is worth more then $500.000 right now”.
Nous travaillons de 8h30 jusqu’à au moins 4h au soir pour quelque chose qui passe en 3 minutes à la TV. Personne d’autre n’appelle. Quand je vois Zdenka et lui demande comment elle a trouvé cela, elle me répond “Good. This room looks nice on T.V.”
Milan appelle et quand je lui dis ce qui s’est passé, il était très content ainsi que Dennis qui devait me donner le numéro de téléphone de Judy car il voulait qu’elle aille au piquenique de dimanche prochain.

Krenuli smo u 10 sati na misu. Od 12h do 1h30 Milan je razgovarao s Velimirom Sulić o odboru za prikupljanje dobrovoljnih priloga za obranu Hrvata. Došli smo kući u 2:15, nakon što smo se zaustavili u trgovini za nešto kupiti. Milan se odlučio kuhati večeru koja je bila jako dobra. Koristio je povrće koje smo ubrali dan ranije. Popodne je prošlo mirno a navečer je otišao kod sestre Kate jer je imala nekoga kod kuće. Dennis je nazvao bez da mi je rekao zašto, a kad je Milan stigao i kad sam mu rekla tko je zvao, odmah je mislio da je to zbog novca. Gdje ćemo ga naći?« Bila sam preumorna da razmišljam o tom problemu i rekla sam sama sebi da ću o tome razmišljati sutra.Ponedjeljak, 10. kolovoza 1981
Mislila sam do sada u 3:00 poslije podne da postoji samo jedan način: prodati sve što imamo. Poslala sam Catherine jutros do Kate jer smo u subotnjim novinama stavili oglas za prodaju kuće a stavili Katin broj telefona. Također, u slučaju da netko nazove, Caterine ili popodne Sophie će mam dati taj broj, mi ćemo ih tada nazvati i dati mi broj naše kuće i onda ćemo im dati sve informacije. Ali cijeli dan nitko nije nazvao. Milan je otišao u Redwood City potražiti novine u kojima ćemo imati intervju. Ali tu nije nikoga bilo.
Utorak, 11. kolovoza 1981
Milan je popodne radio u San Bruno, ja idem s djecom kupiti odjeću za školu. Krećemo oko 12:30 h, a vraćamo se oko 14:30 h. Skoro sve je kupljeno. Dolazeći kući, na vratima nalazim dva primjerka “Peninsula Tribunea” i članak je senzacionalan. Milan također donosi 2 primjerka i njemu je članak također jako dobar. Milan ide navečer kod Kate i tu se ništa posebno ne događa. Zovem Ivicu Miličević da kupi 2 primjerka novina.
Srijeda 12. kolovoza 1981
Polazak u 8 sati ujutro. Svako jutro je uzbuđeno. Shvatiš? Vidjet ćemo se na TV-u! Što će naši prijatelji misliti? Zašto nas žele? Zar nisu mogli razgovarati samo s tatom? Idemo u San Bruno jer Milan mora nešto vidjeti. Idemo onda u Qauntas po novine Hrvatskog Tjednika koje su valjda stigle iz Australije. U 8:20 stižemo u United Airlines gdje odlazimo na blagajnu. Nema nikoga i Milan kaže da će nas novinari dočekati u salonu United Airlines. Krećemo u potragu za Dennisom i naći ćemo ga blizu pokretnih stepenica. Idemo u United Airlines lounge i čekamo nekih 10 minuta. 9 ujutro je tu, ali kanal 7 je odsutan. Milan im odluči krenuti u susret i pronaći ih u hodniku. Ali vidimo ih kako dolaze prema nama. Snimatelj nama leđima i Milan Parle ispred kamere. Kad Dennis to vidi, kaže mi: “Bolje idi i vidi o čemu pričaju”. Malo po malo, kreću prema nama, snimatelj po imenu John i reporterka Joyce traže od Johna da slika dječake, ali kad vide kameru, ne miču se. Milan, Dennis i Joyce pričaju iza nas, politika, povijest, životna priča, ali najveća tema bila je Hrvatska itd…
Kad John ima dovoljno snimke dječaka koji se još uvijek ne miču, okreće kameru prema nama. Ostali putnici se osvrću prema nama pitajući se što se događa. John se okreće Milanu, Dennisu i Joyce i kamera se neko vrijeme vrti. Joyce zatim želi malo filma u salonu s ostalim putnicima, pregled. Kad John prođe ispred dječaka, vidi da su se počeli zabavljati svojim “figuricama iz Ratova zvijezda”. Iskorištava priliku da ih povede, posebno Stjepana jer su Rapael i Mile mlađi pobjegli. Njih troje uvijek pričaju iza. Kad smo ustali da krenemo u 9:30 jer Sophie ima dogovoren posao u Marine World, Joyce mi je rekla da će biti u našoj kući kako bi slikala kuću oko 11 sati. otišli smo ujutro u 8 ujutro i krevet nije bio pospremljen. Kažem: Požuri!… Dolazak u Marine World u 10 ujutro, napuštamo Sophie i u 10:25. Dolazimo kući oko 10:40 i za 20 minuta dovodimo kuću u red, krevete, suđe itd… Odlazim dok zamolim Catherine da pokupi igračke i usisa obiteljsku sobu.
Otišla sam po Sophie i vratila se kući oko 11:15, a Joyce i John još uvijek nisu bili došli. Djeca su gladna, napravila sam im sendviče i upavo dok su ih jeli, evo Joyce i Johna stižu. Kažu mi da su stali malo u South San Francisco i da im je Debby rekla da nijedna rezervacija nije otkazana iako im je Milan, Debbyin otac, rekao da je bilo otkazivanja. Pitaju me da li bi bilo moguće uslikati ove dvije karte Hrvatske koje se nalaze u dnevnoj sobi. Dok je gledala po sobi. Joyce vidi fotografiju Milana na šanku s gajbama i škotskom kapom…i novinu Peninsula News sa slikom Milana kad je bio uhapšen.
Nekoliko minuta kasnije nalazim, odnosno njegovu fotografiju u hrvatskoj nošnji, a Joyce mi kaže “Divno”! Objašnjava Johnu zašto želi ovu fotografiju u kostimu i s tačkama i fotografiju šalica za kavu s hrvatskim grbom. (Prilažem sliku te “šalice za kafu”, danas srijeda 19 listopada 2022.,mo. Mile.)

Pokažem joj onda hrvatski “grb” koji imamo i odmah ona kaže Johnu. “Sačuvat ću to za kraj. Slikat ćemo pročelje kuće kao i mjesto gdje bi trebao biti ovaj grb iznad vrata. Prođe nekoliko minuta tijekom kojih se kamera okreće i Joyce pita zatim snimiti komad filma cijele dnevne sobe, blagovaonice i kuhinje. Sve u svemu, sesija je trajala oko 1:30. Nakon filma intervjua, John izlazi van i fotografira kuću izvana. Joyce i Milan razgovaraju međusobno i ona mu kaže da bi voljela imati neke od ovih fotografija u nošnji za uspomenu.Milan joj je rekao da joj te fotografije ne daje u svoje ime nego u ime Hrvatske za koju je rođen, jer koju živi i za koju daje svoj život. Milan u hrvatskoj nošnji i Joyce kaže: “Ovaj čovjek 20 godina izvan svoje zemlje, još uvijek voli biti njegovo nacionalno ruho” i zatim fotografija karte Hrvatske “koja sada pripada u Jugoslaviju” Ona mi kaže da će ova priča izaći večeras između 6 ujutro i 7 ujutro na kanalu 7. Zovem odmah Velimira Sulića da javimo novosti oko San Josea. Telefoniram Kati da učini isto oko San Matea. Telefonirao sam po cijelom Bay Areau i okolo dajući im do znanja da večeras gledaju TV
Popodne obavim kupovinu i izbor i ostalo do 6h ujutro. Stojimo ispred televizora i čekamo. U 6:10 ujutro Van Amburg najavljuje: “Slijedi priča o hrvatskom teroristu koji se bori na stranom tlu za Hrvatsku, ali sebe naziva drugim imenom: “Hrvatski borac”. Nakon ovih nekoliko riječi, publicitet koji omogućuje Nedjeljko Miličević da sam uspio spremiti njegov magnetofon. Nakon reklame, evo filma Stjepana kako se igra sa svojim ljudima iz Ratova zvijezda i zatim fotografije Milana koji kaže: „Želim da moja djeca znaju odakle im je otac. Ne želim da ako i kada ih netko pita odakle dolazim da ne znaju što bi rekli”. Zatim kadar Milana kako ljubi djecu i nas kako idemo pokretnim stepenicama Zatim film kuhinje i obiteljske sobe u perspektive, a Joyce nastavlja: “Nije loše za čovjeka koji je došao u Ameriku sa 170 dolara u paketu prije 12 godina. Njegova kuća trenutno vrijedi više od 500.000 dolara.”
A onda pogled izvana s Joyceom koji drži hrvatski “grb” na vratima i govori “Ovaj grb bi trebao ići uz vrata. Nakon što se sve ovo završi, više neće biti vrata za postavljanje kraj. Zadnja fotka je Milan i Dennis. Milan sa širokim osmijehom i “V” znakom pobjede. Jako dobar intervju i po prvi put ništa negativno s hrvatske strane nije rečeno, ovo je pravo čudo Van Amburg nastavlja: “Javit ćemo vam što će se dogoditi s ovim čovjekom u budućnosti”. Kata zove i također je jako zadovoljna ovom pričom. Nevjerojatno!
Radimo od 8:30 do najmanje 16:00 za nešto što se emitira u 3 minute na TV-u. Nitko drugi ne zove. Kad vidim Zdenku i pitam je kako je ovo pronašla, ona odgovara “Dobro. Ova soba izgleda lijepo na TV-u.”
Milan zove i kad sam mu rekla što se dogodilo, bio je jako sretan kao i Dennis koji mi je morao dati Judyin broj telefona jer je želio da iduće nedjelje ide na piknik.
Idemo spavati oko 10:30.

We left at 10 a.m. for mass. From 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Milan spoke with Velimir Sulić about this committee for the voluntary collection of money for the defense of Croats. Came home at 2:15 a.m. after stopping at the store. Milan decided to have dinner, which was very good. He used the vegetables we picked the day before. The afternoon passed calmly and in the evening he went to his sister Kata because she had someone at home. I sent Catherine in the morning to Kata’s because we put an advertisement to sell the house in the Saturday newspaper while putting Kata’s telephone number. Also, in case someone calls, Catherine or in the afternoon Sophie, will give him the telephone number of our house and we will give them the information. But all day, no one has a phone. Milan went to Redwood City to get the newspaper where we were to have the interview. But there was nothing.

Milan worked in San Bruno in the afternoon, I went with the children to buy clothes for school. We leave around 12:30 p.m. and return at 2:30 p.m. Almost everything has been purchased. Coming home, I find two copies of “Peninsula Tribune ” at the door and the article is sensational. Milan also bought 2 copies and he also found the article very good. Milan goes to Kata in the evening and nothing special happens here. I telephone Ivica Miličević so that she buys 2 copies of the newspaper.

Departure at 8 a.m. Every morning I’m excited. You realize? We will be seen on TV! What will our friends think? Why do they want us? Could they talk to Papa only? We are going to San Bruno because Milan must see something. Then let’s go to Qantas plane to get the Hrvatski Tjednik newspapers which must have arrived from Australia. At 8:20 am we arrive at United Airlines where we go to the ticket counter. No one is there and Milan says the reporters are to meet us at the United Airlines lounge. We go in search of Dennis and will find him near the escalators. We head to the United Airlines lounge and wait about 10 minutes. 9h is there but Chantal 7 is absent. Milan decides to meet them and finds them in the corridor. But we see them coming towards us. Cameraman with his back to us and Milan parle in front of the camera. When Dennis sees this, he tells me: “Better go and see what they are talking about”. Little by little, they move towards us, a cameraman who is called John and a reporter named Joyce asks John to take pictures of the boys, but when they see the camera, they no longer move. Milan, Dennis and Joyce talk behind us, politics, history, life story, but the biggest subject was Croatia etc…
When John has enough footage of the boys still not moving, he turns the camera to us. The other passengers turn on us wondering what is going on. John turns to Milan, Dennis and Joyce and the camera rolls for a while. Joyce then wants a bit of film on the lounge with the other passengers, an overview. When John walks past the boys, he sees that they have started having fun with their “Star Wars figures”. He takes the opportunity to take them, especially Stjepan because Raphaël and Mile junior have escaped. The three always talk behind their backs. When we get up to leave at 9:30 am because Sophie has an appointment at Marine World for a job, Joyce tells me that she will be at our house to take pictures of the house around 11 am.
We left at 8am in the morning and no bed was made. I say: Let’s hurry!…Arrived at Marine World at 10am, we left Sophie and at 10:25. We arrive at the house around 10:40 a.m. and in 20 minutes we put the house in order, beds, dishes, etc. I leave while asking Catherine to pick up the toys and vacuum the family room.
A few minutes later I find or rather his photo in Croatian costume and Joyce tells me “Wonderful”! We’ll take a picture of the front of the house as well as the place where this coat of arm should be above the door. A few minutes pass during which the camera rolls and Joyce asks then to take a piece of film of the whole living room, dining room and kitchen. In all, the session lasted about 1h30. After the film of the interview, John goes outside and takes a picture of the house externally. Joyce and Milan talk to each other and she tells him that she would like to have some of these photos in costume to remember. Milan told her that he does not give these photos to her in his name but in the name of Croatia for which he was born, for which he lives and for which he gives his life. I call Velimir Sulić immediately to announce the news around San Jose. I phone Kata to do the same around San Mateo. I’ve been phoning all around the Bay Area and around letting them know to watch T.V. tonight
In the afternoon I do the shopping and choice and the other until 6am arrived. We stand in front of the TV and wait. And then a view from outside with Joyce holding the Croatian “coat of arm” at the door and saying “This coat of arm is supposed to go with the door. After all this is finished, there won’t be any door to put it over. The last photo is of Milan and Dennis. Milan with a big smile and the “V” the sign of Victory. We work from 8:30 a.m. until at least 4 p.m. for something that is broadcast in 3 minutes on TV. Nobody else calls. When I see Zdenka and ask her how she found this, she replies “Good. This room looks nice on T.V.”
