Slika vjenčanja u parizu Mile i Annie Boban, subota 31 srpnja 1965.
– 2 appraisals of the house
– deed of trust in the name of Clerk of the Court.
Večeras me nazvao Milan i razgovarali smo oko 20 minuta.
Kada sam čuvaru rekla ime “Mile Boban”, on pogleda spisak i kaže mi: “Nemam ja to ime ovdje.
Išla sam u hrvatsku crkvu s djecom u San Jose na misu, a kad dođemo kući, ostavit ću dejcu kući a ja ravno krećem u San Francisco vidjeti Milana.
It seems so easy that I thought I would have Milan out in the afternoon. With the lawyer, we therefore went down to the office of the Clerk Court” a Mr. D’Amelio who was not there. He had to appear in court and was to return in 30 minutes. So we went down to the cafeteria to pass the time. After 30 minutes we went back up to the 11th floor at D’Amelio’s who still wasn’t there, but the secretary dutifully went looking for him. But we started to go to the 19th floor , no D’Amelio; on the 18th floor we found him. He went back to his office with us and gave us a list of what he needed:
– 2 appraisals of the house
– deed of trust in the name of Clerk of the Court.
After arriving home, I got in touch with Title insurance who told me that I could not have these papers until Monday evening at the latest. I phoned Milan Cvitanović to try to expedite these papers, but Doreen (his wife) couldn’t get him with his “pager”, not knowing where to find me and not being able to do anything more that day, I went to pick up the children at Zdenka.
Tonight Milan phoned me and we talked for about 20 minutes. He told me that tomorrow from 11:30 am to 2:30 was the day of the visit and that we could see each other. On the phone, when I inquired about visiting hours, I was told that they were for federal cases, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays so I asked the guard by Milan if I could really visit it tomorrow. He told us yes. So, full of hope, we say goodbye and see you tomorrow. To see each other, only through a mirror or a grille, would be a little better than the telephone. That evening also I telephoned Milan Cvitanović if he could go, Monday morning as soon as the doors of the Title Co. open, to speed up the papers. He said, no problem, he’ll go there with Don Norwold and they’ll do whatever it takes. That night, I went to bed with a little more hope. At least I know that Monday Milan will be close to me and tomorrow I could see him.
Saturday June 27
Arriving at the 6th floor I see a line of people, at least fifty behind a desk. At the desk sits a black guard with a bald head. People file past him (95% are black), the guard ticks off the name on the list and people come in through a door and go somewhere. About twenty minutes pass like this and the guard tells us “the next round and in 20 minutes, the visitors can talk to each other for 20 minutes”. So, 20 minutes of waiting during which I only think about what I’m going to say to Milan during these 20 minutes of visit. When I tell him the name “Mile Boban”, he looks at the list and says to me: “I don’t have that name here. When was he arrested”. I told him “Thursday morning”. He replied that indeed Milan should be there, but maybe he was on the 7th floor. I had to go down to the ground floor, take the elevator reserved for prisoners and here I am on the 7th floor. I did not like this atmosphere, when I arrived at the 7th floor and the elevator door opened, I found myself in a cage, with a bell. I pressed the bell and after a few minutes, a small sliding door opened and just the face of the guard, or rather the eyes came out. He asks me what I want and, with my throat tight, because I only think of Milan and how he must feel there. I ask him if it is possible for me to see Mile Boban. He said to me, “oh yes, Milan is there, if I want to visit him. Go to the 6th floor and ask to see him”.
There, I realized that the guard who had told Milan the visiting hours knew perfectly well what was going to happen. So I got in the car and from Bryant Street to the house, it’s barely thirty minutes. I was driving so fast with tears in my eyes and didn’t care if the police were going to stop me or not. I got home and the kids told me that Milan had called and asked why I hadn’t gone to see him. Which pissed me off even more, because someone could have at least told Milan that I had come to see him and that I was there. So I waited for that phone all afternoon, because he said he was going to call back. I made dinner, but my stomach was so tight, and I wondered why he wasn’t calling; and that I could not eat or swallow anything, because nothing could come down.
