Mercredi 2 septembre 1981

Je me couche vers 11h30.

Samedi 5 septembre 1981

Nema problema. Putna karta za putovanje T.W.A u Chicago i natrag košta 285 USD + porez.

Četvrtak, 3. rujna 1981

Milan radi u Millbrae i San Bruno, ovdje ništa posebno.

Petak, 4. rujna 1981

Navečer oko 8 sati Milan Cvitanović dolazi a zatim Velimir Sulić i Filip Šola. oni odlaze oko 10.15 sati. a Milan Cvitanović ih vozi do zračne luke. Ja Idem spavati oko 11:30.

Subota, 5. rujna 1981

Tu ostajemo do 4:15 i onda krećemo prema “Great America ” uzeti Catherine i Drinu. U 5:15 Catherine i Drina dolaze do auta. On je tu gazda i “Veliki šef”. A ja moram čekati dok Doreen i Milan Cvitanović odu. U 01:00 poslije polnoći oni odlaze, a mi stižemo u kući oko 01:40. Ja idem odmah u krevet spavati i spavala sam dugo dok se nije dobro ojutrilo.

Nedjelja, 6. rujna 1981

On odgovara “bit će i previše”. O.K.
Zatim meso i povrće. Malo više i više pirea.

Nothing definite. Milan asked me to call the airline company because this weekend he is going to Chicago for a tour of Croatian football Clubs in the USA and Canada, but he told me to take the plane ticket in the name of GABRIĆ. No problem. Round trip ticket for T.W.A trip to Chicago is $285 + tax.

Thursday, September 3, 1981

Milan worked in Millbrae and San Bruno, nothing special here.

Friday, September 4, 1981

Milan works all day. Before departure, he asked me to change the name on the plane ticket from GABRIĆ to BOBAN, because it will be suspicious if I go to Chicago under a different name. I called the airline T.W.A. and told them to change the name from M. GABRIĆ, to M. Boban, because I was confused. They told me there was no problem. In the evening, around 8 o’clock, Milan Cvitanović arrives, followed by Velimir Sulić and Filip Šola. They leave around 10.15 am. and Milan Cvitanović drives them to the airport. I go to sleep around 11:30.

Saturday, September 5, 1981

Sophie leaves at 8am for work in South San Francisco with Debie. She will work there during the wedding of a Mexican family, and in the evening I will join them at a dinner in honor of the Croatian Football Club. I take Catherine and Drina to “Great America” around 10:30 in the morning and tell them I’ll pick them up around 5:15. PM. The boys and I go to Huddart Park for a long walk. The boys each had their own backpack with a sandwich, a drink, fruit, cake and we will walk for about 2:30 through the forest. Little son Mile is so proud of his backpack that he walks the whole time without complaining, which is a real miracle. At 1:30 all the sandwiches are gone, eaten and we are going to Riconaga Park in Palo Alto. We stay there until 4:15 and then we leave for “Great America” to pick up Catherine and Drina. At 5:15 Catherine and Drina arrive at the car. At 6 we arrive home and at 7 PM I go to Foster City to pick up Doreen. We’ll go to South San Francisco together. When we got there, the wedding was in full swing, and the dinner of the Croatian Football Club was on the second floor and the wedding was on the fourth. There were between 75 and 100 guests and there was too much food. Ante Batković, who should normally be included in this evening, does not lift a finger to help. He is the boss and the “Big Boss” there. Milan Cvitanović complains to me “This is the last time that I take someone else’s ‘mess’ on my shoulders, my back”. Sophie and Debbie leave around 10:30, and after about 30 minutes, Sophie calls me to say that she has the house keys with her. And I have to wait until Doreen and Milan Cvitanović leave. At 01:00 after midnight they leave and we arrive at the house around 01:40. I immediately went to bed to sleep and I slept for a long time until the morning broke.

Sunday, September 6, 1981

Peaceful morning, although I woke up at 7 instead of the planned 10… Around 11 o’clock we arrived at Burlingame High School where the football tournament games were held. At 6 o’clock we arrive in South San Francisco and we should have guests that evening. In order to change a little, we won’t have to work. Dennis arrives around 6:45 and of course we are already busy, Doreen, Debbie, Sophie and I have been assigned to work. I’m so busy I hardly have time to talk to him, Dennis. Milan Cvitanović takes care of Dennis and introduces him to Mr. Mate Kovačević. We set the tables. I return to the kitchen and we see 2 boxes of 5 kilos of macaroni. I ask Ante Batković if they have enough macaroni for dinner? He tells us that it is, I tell him that it won’t be enough for 200 people. He replies “there will be too many”. O.K. At this moment, we all decide that, if there are complaints and dissatisfactions, we will refer those who complain to Anto Batković. So we don’t say anything about the amount of food anymore. Around 8 o’clock, Batković’s daughters come and tell us that they will serve. We took our seats, but the service was so slow that we went back to the kitchen and helped them.
As we knew and what we said, there was not enough macaroni and the first tables had it, but the last ones at the end of the room had the remains of sarma from the previous day, and some tables had nothing. Then meat and vegetables. One thin slice of roast beef, a spoonful of puree and a spoonful of green vegetables left over from the previous day. At the end of several tables, there are some green vegetables. A little more and more puree. As people complained more and more because the service wasn’t fast enough, and they were hungry, while waiting for the chef to make another pot of puree, about twenty people got a cup of what was left of the sauerkraut at the bottom of the sarma bowl. It’s a shame to pay $15 for a meal like that. As there was not enough to eat, the drink went to people’s heads and they became louder and louder. At the end of the meal, the Vancouver team finished in first place, and they threw napkins around the hall and on the tables out of joy. This is the conclusion and end of the description of Annie Boban’s Diary, which she started writing on Thursday, June 25, 1981, and finished on Sunday, September 6, 1981.Today is Sunday October 30, 2022.
