Donosim ovdje na engleskom jeziku za hrvatsko općinstvo jedno službeno pismo jugoslavenskog konzulata iz San Francisca upućeno gradonačelniku Los Angelesa gosp. Tom Bradley. Hvala unaprijed. Mile Boban, Otporaš.
CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE SOCIALIST FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA 1919 SACRAMENTO ST., SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, TELEPHONE 776-4941
September 12, 1975.
The Honorable
Tom Bradley
Mayor of the City of los Angeles
City Hall
Los Angeles, Ca.
Dear Mayor Bradley:
In the San Pedro News Pilot of August 27, 1975, an article was published with the title, “S.P. jubilee salute Bicentennial”. I am pleased that such a festival is being held and that various ethnic groups are participating in it, since thet, along with yhe ethnic groups of the rest of America, contributed to the establishment and development of your United States of America.
And in Yugoslavia, as well, the 200th anniversary of the USA will be celebrated on the fourth of July, 1976, with many Americans of Yugoslav descent participating in it.
on the occasion of his recent visit to Yugoslavia, President Ford congratulated the Yugoslav government for its readiness to contribute to the celebration of the Bicentennial of the USA trough various cultural and artistic events. In a joint statement by the who presidents, it said, among other things, that both of them expressed the profound historical and cultural ties which Americans of Yugoslav descent have always had in strengthening the ties of friendship between their new and their old homelands. The two presidents agreed that those ties should be further strengthened.
In the cited article, it was said, probably inadvertently, (nije “inadvertently” tj. nehotice to izišlo u novini “San Pedro News Pilot” blizu Los Angelesa, nego mirnim, kulturnim i povijestnim naporima i nastupima svih Hrvata San Pedra i Los Angelesa. Mo. Otporaš.) that participating in the festival are representatives of “Yugoslavia, Italy, Costa Rica, Mexico, Argentina, Armenia, Guatemala and Croatia”. Because, from this list of countries it could be concluded by uninformed readers, that besides the Socialist Federal Republik of Yugoslavia there exists an independent state of Croatia, we sent a letter to the editor of the news Pilot, explaining that such a state of Croatia does not exist.
As you know, Yugoslavia is a Federal Socialist Republic compromised of six socialist republics – Slovenia, Croatia, Bosna and Hercegovina, Serbia, Macedonia and Monte Negro, and two socialist autonomous provinces – Vojvodina and Kosovo which are within the socialist republic of Serbia.
When it states in the above mentioned article that representatives of Yugoslavia are participating, then it is understood that they are representing Yugoslavia as a whole, and of cours, that they belong to one of the Yugoslav nations such as (1) Slovenian, (2) Macedonian, (3) Croatian, (4) Serbian, (5) Montenegrin, or one of the nationalities such as (1) Hungarian, (2) Albanian and others. If it had stated in the article that participating in the festival were representatives of various Yugoslav nations and nationalities or representatives from the Socialist Republic of Croatia, the it would have been entierly correct because it would have been clear that one of the socialist republic of Yugoslavia was being spoken about. Mo. Otporaš.)
Perhaps you will ask why I am explaining this. The reason is very simple. It is known that there is no independent state of Croatia outside of Yugoslavia. (Čak ni u Jugoslaviji nije bilo Nezavisne Države Hrvatske, mo. Otporaš.) So that in the future there might not be confusion about the mentioned facts, I wish to remind you of things more.
Four day after the entry of Hitler’s troops into Yugoslavia, April 10, 1941. the so-colled “independent state of croatia” was created, and it was the most faithful ally of hitler and Mussolini all durnig the war, and as such, on December 15, 1941, just eight days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, it declared war on your country. Mo. Otporaš.) During the time that quisling regime endured, one of the greatet genocides in Europe was perpetrated. Those who belonged to the so-called “independent state of Croatia” – ustasi, who were identical to Hitler’s storm troops, killed over 600,000 women, elderly, children and partisans, all belonging to the nations and nationalities of Yugoslavia. Mo. Otporaš.)
Unfortunately, the remnants of those forces are located in the Los Angeles and Harbor area, also, and they still dream of renewing the so-called “independent state of Croatia”. Such a state can never again be revived because the Croatian nation along with the other nations and nationalities of Socialist Yugoslavia, passed judgement on such a state during its liberation struggle of 1941-1945, and so didi our allies during that period – among them the USA.
We have been informed that the flag of just that so-called “independent state of Croatia” will be raised in ceremony scheduled for the International Jubilee on September 20 or 21, 1975. Also, that Mr. John Gibson, Councilman, is allegedly the sponsor of the Jubilee which is under direction of the Parks and Recreation department of the harbor District.
At the same time, we have been made to realize that the ustasi flag (kakova mržnja proizlazi iz ovih službenih predstavnika Jugoslavije nazivajući hrvatsku nacionalnu zastavu “ustaškom”, mo. Otporaš.) has already been raised during one of the soccer games within the program of the International Jubilee, though some Americans of Yugoslav descent brought Miss Spang’s attention to this in due time (Miss Spang is an employee of the aforementioned Parks and Recreation department). Mo. Mile Boban, Otporaš.) Nevertheles, she did nothing to prevent the raising of that ustasi flag. Her inaction is totaly incomprehensible to us, since she must have known, when she had already been warned of the nature of such an action, that the raising of the ustasu flag was aimed objectively against integrity of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Considering that this question is known to you more broadly, we do not wish to elaborate further. From you, we only expect that necessary steps will be taken immediately to prevent whatever new anti-Yugoslav acts might occur.
We believe that our justified reaction will receive your complete understanding and appropriate response in the spirite of the existing friendly relations between our two countries.
Thank you for consideration and attention.
Sincerely yours Milutin Stojanović,
Acting Consul General
