The house has two floors, each with five apartments, a total of ten apartments
I will summarize, i.e. briefly, how the Croatian Building of ten (10) apartments was built. Before I start writing this brief history, I would politely, brotherly and Croatian ask all readers to open their eyes very well, and with the need to make sure as much as possible that under the brick wall and the top of the garage door you can see two-foot letters, which is about 60 cm. The Croatian national coat of arms with the initial white field is between those two words.
I have attached two pictures to show how the building looked from the street. Below these two pictures I will briefly describe why I gave this building the name that can be seen on the left and right sides of the coat of arms. This coat of arms is from google on the internet, and the coat of arms I personally drew according to the size of the letters, the same space between one and the other words. Please take that into consideration.
I’m in the city of Midland, 320 miles west of the city of Austin, which is about 520 km, he was building 85 houses. It took me 2 years and 2 months to finish that project. Through my construction connections, I was called from Austin one day by Mr. Shelby Carter and asked me if I would like to build him a two-story, 6,200-square-foot house, which is about a thousand square meters. I expressed my desire to agree to the construction of his house. We agreed that I would come to the city of Austin, which was my first time to come to the capital of Texas, Austin.
Mr. Shelby Carter and I met at a restaurant, had lunch there, he gave me (9) plans: (1) for the plumber, (1) for the electrician, (1) for the roofer, (1) for all the woodwork inside the house, (1) ) for air conditioning, (1) for a makeup artist and ceramics, (2) for the municipality to obtain a building permit and (1) for me. In less than two weeks, I professionally calculated how much it would cost in total to make that house ready to move into. Americans say about such jobs: Turn Key Job, which roughly means: I give you the money, and you give me the turnkey when the house is finished.
Mr. Shelby Carter was an overseer of nine (9) different banks, which could mean he was a director of those banks. He agreed to my price and after finishing my houses in Midland, I moved in May 1985 to Austin. I immediately started building that house and it was finished in the middle of February 1986. During that time while I was building the house of Mr. Shelby Carter, he often came to see the progress of the construction of his house. As he was very satisfied with my work, he hinted that he would be happy to help me through his banks to give me a loan for the construction of houses or buildings. So I came up with the idea of buying a condo in the middle of the city of Austin, not far from the University or the University. I bought an apartment house, found an architect and a construction engineer.
When the plan was finished, signed by the architect and the engineer, with two plans I went to the city of Austin, the building department, I filled out all the necessary forms to get a building permit, the lady in charge told me that it would take a couple of weeks while all supervisory experts review and approve it, and that they will notify me. There was a pull/pull while the permit was obtained. One of those “pulls” was the name CROATIA APARTMENTS, because it doesn’t belong in the construction profession, etc. I was persistent and unyielding. My explanation was that in their town there are buildings that bear the names of almost all nations in the world, and why there can’t be a building that bears the name of Croatia. Believe it or not, they were convinced and they relented, and so they gave me and issued a permit for the construction of this magnificent building CROATIA APARTMENTS in the capital of Texas.
I started building the building in April and finished it at the end of August, so students can move in at the beginning of September when school starts. I had that building until my bankruptcy at the beginning of 1994, and I had no problems with the rent or the monthly repayment of the loan to the bank.
In the early nineties, the construction business here in Texas declined to such an extent that little by little the builders lost their jobs, the income did not come, many buildings were taken over by the banks, and thus ended the first and only Croatian Building in Austin, CROATIA APARTMENTS. The bank sold that building to someone else, who immediately painted over the name of the Croatian building, so that the letters of the inscription are not clearly visible, but with good will, this can also be seen as credible evidence that the Croatian building existed with our Croatian name.
Yesterday, March 23, 2023, I came across there, and I deliberately stopped, after more than a quarter of a century of not seeing that building; I took a picture of it and am attaching it to Croats as a part of my life history. this took a little longer, so please understand me and don’t blame me.
