Freedom fighters:
A Growing threat?
By RANDY HAGIHARA
There is a group of foreign nationalists willing to die for a cause that is little recognized by most Americans.
Because of the group’s past association with Nazi Germany, and because of the zeal and fatalistic determination of their cause, the free world has largely turned its back on their fight, these nationalists feel.
In some ways they they are a contradiction: They are staunchly anti-communists, but they are willing to side with the Soviet Union, if need be to gain what they seek.
They call themselves “Croatian freedom fighters,” and their sole purpose is the destruction of the communist regime in Yugoslavia and the establishment of an independent Croatia.
Two such freedom fighters sat in the dark but noisy cicktail lounge at San Jose Municipal Airport, explaining the meaning and ultimate purpose behind their organization – OTPOR
“OTPOR means resistance” resistance to the genocide and destruction of the Croatians nation” said Velimir Sulić, secretary of OTPOR for the North American continent.
“The purpose of OTPOR is to help Croatians – to install nationalistic spirit,” Mile Boban, North American president of the worldwide organization, said.
Both men denied that OTPOR is a secret organization. It is, Boban pointed out, a fully chartered, non-profit organization with a set of bylaws and a monthly publication.
OTPOR came to attention just after the November killing of Glendale resident Križan Brkić.
It was believed that the investigation into Brkic’s death was focusing on local members of the organization from names supplied to authorities by other Croatians.
However, knowledgeable sources said no evidence has turned up which links OTPOR to the Glandale killing..
Nevertheless, little is said openly about OTPOR, whose global membership appears is to be largely unknown.
Southern California Croatians outside the organization appear to view members of OTPOR as “right-wing extremists.”
Said one leading Croatians here: “You cannot talk to them, to the members of OTPOR, you cannot plead with them. This is not the way of doing things. We do not need revolution. If you want it, go home and fight it there, not 8,000 miles away. But they will just not listen. I think they are frustrated and part ot them are manipulated”
Sulic did not deny that OTPOR’s ultimate aim could lead to violence. “Our principal (goal) is clear,” he said, “we are to destroy Yugoslavia by any means.”
However, Sluic and Boban reiterated that their organization works only within legal boundaries in the United States.
but the Yugoslav government continually accuses Croatian extremists of “terroristic” acts against its interests in the USA.
Un of the most widely publicized instances was the 1976 hijacking of a TWA airliner from New York.
“The hijacking was yet another unsuccessful attempt at waging a special kind of war against Yugoslavia,” said a “white paper” issued by the Yugoslav Embassy. “This time, however, it also was directed against the U.S. government and its foreign policy, in particular against the good relations with Yugoslavia.”
However, Croatians both inside and outside OTPOR counter by accusing the Yugoslav government of a worldwide liquidation program of Croatians. Krizan Brkic was a victim of that program, Croatians say.
Indeed, Boban said that 19 “professional killers” were sent from Yugoslavia to assassinate Croatians in North America. He said a “hit list” is circulating in Europe with names of 22 prominent Croatian emigres on it.
But way would the Yugoslav government expend time and energy, not to mention vast sums of money, on an immigrant group”
One prevailing theory states that the regime in Yugoslavia is preparing for the eventual death of its 88 year-old president, Josip Broz Tito. The government, according to the theory is concentrating on “enemies” outside the state so that it will not have to deal with external movement once that internal power struggle begins with Tito’s demise.
Asked what could happen in Yugoslavia if Tito died tomorrow, Sulic said there are three possibilities: The Soviet Union would invade as it did in Czechoslovakia in 1968 and in Hungary in 1956; the regime would continue much as it has, with the possibility of some decentralization; or a “bloody civil war” would ensue.
Sulic and Boban agreed that the letter was most likely to happen.
To be sure, the Croatian hatred and struggle for independence is deeply rooted in Croatia’s cultural heritage. For centuries Croatia have fought for an independent state.
The closest Croatians came in modern times was during World War ll, which led them into a pact with Nazi Germany.

Today, any Croatian movement for independence has been branded as “Fascist” by the Yugoslav government.

Oddly enough, Croatians who express their anti communism in no uncertain terms, appear to be regarded with suspicion in the democratic countries of the free world.
Sulic and Boban, as well as other Croatians, expressed an abhorrence (gađenje) concerning present U.S. policy toward Yugoslavia. They said U.S. policy and courtship of Tito is misguided and dangerous, much as the policy toward Iran and its shah.
And part of that foreign policy, Croatians charge, is the harassment waged by U.S. authorities and the immunity with which Yugoslav agents are allowed to work inside the U.S.
One Croatian observer predicted that if this country continued on its present course, Croatians would be forced into an anti-American posture.
“Believe me,” he said, “they have the ability to make the Palestinian terrorists look like amateurs.”
Since the formation of the Republic of Yugoslavia during the war years, the propaganda war between the Yugoslavs and Croatians has shifted outside the realm of Europe as Croatian emigres, many political refugees, spread around the world, OTPOR was the one who took the initiative.
    And so has the violence.
Many Croatians, to be sure, want little to do with a fight for an independent Croatia. (Žele pridonijeti za nezavisnost Hrvatske)
But most feel, especially after the Brkic murder, that they are not beyond the violence. As one Croatian-America put it, “I was safer inside Yugoslavia under communism than I am in the United States under democracy”.
Both Sulic and Boban said they were marked men. Late in November, on day San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were killed, authorities informed Boban of a possible attempt on his and Sulic’s life.
“They said that every day the circle was drawing closer,” and Boban said, drawing concentric circles on a cocktail napkin.

Said Sulić: “They (Yugoslav government)will knock off Croatians anywhere in the world just to create fear. They yhink that by killing Croatians they will stop the cause. But there is no way. A lot of Croatians will die, but one of those days Croatia will be free. And I hop it is very, very soon”.

HRVATSKI BORCI ZA SLOBODU: DA LI SU ONI PRIJETNJA?

Posebni izvjestitelj
Borci za slobodu;
Rastuća prijetnja?
Autor RANDY HAGIHARA

Bob Gorett došao me je posjetiti.
