O B I Č A J Z A B O Ž I Ć = CUSTOM FOR CHRISTMAS

CUSTOM FOR CHRISTMAS
First – Wheat is sown in a wooden or glass container around the feast of St. Lucia on or before December 13. My Mother Iva, nicknamed Vićeka, always told me that it is customary to sow wheat on the day of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, and on Christmas day to put three candles as a sign of the Croatian tricolor in the colors: Red, White, Blue.
English
Second – In those forgotten and different times for all of us today, 2023, it was customary to decorate the house from all sides: windows and doors with pine and ivy branches. I am attaching a picture of our house.
English
Third – Our Mother would send me to the hill above our village Bobanova Draga to cut the necessary branches to decorate and ornate the house for Christmas and New Year.
English
Fourth – At that time, Christmas was celebrated for 4 days. The first day was Christmas, the second day was St. Stephen the First Martyr, the third day was St. John the Baptist, the fourth day is Holy Innocent day, which means: Innocent children whom King Herod, fearing that the newborn King Jesus Christ might destroy his kingdom, had all male children under the age of two killed.
English
Fifth – On Christmas Day, the day before Christmas, our Mother Iva would bake 4 loaves of bread all day long, and she would tell us that her work was “working day” that should not be done for St. holidays. When the bread is in the dutch oven and before putting it under fire Our Mother placed, and this is how other Mothers did it also, a cross of some jewelry with which she would stamp an image on the bread, so that when the bread is baked, the images will appear on the bread.
English
Sixth – On Christmas, the candles are extinguished with a piece of bread dipped in wine. This bread is left in the middle of the candles and will be used to extinguish the candles every time until the New Year, and until The Three Kings we celebrate on January 6. Since it is all blessed and the blessed bread is dipped in wine, it is not thrown away, but is given to the sheep that comes out of the barn first in the morning. Today it would be to give it to a cat or a dog with the same intention and blessing and not to step on it and throw it away, but to honor it blessedly in the same way as today when there are far fewer domestic animals and far more empty stables.
